Late Old Style type style of the baroque period. Like the Venetian types, this style is based on calligraphic principles, including modulated stroke, oblique axis, adnate serifs and modeled terminals, and moderate aperture. The Garalde italics are closely associated with their corresponding roman fonts and are designed to be used together with them in a subordinate role.

I am working on a logo which make use of font Francker
I need your advice and knowledge about the solution used to construct a capital "Y" letter in this font. Maybe its my ignorance but i found a corner circled in red a bit annoying.

Please take a closer look and tell me why this letter is constructed that way? Is there any other solution which will help to get rid of the "corner"?

I have recently noticed the lack of professional quality fonts available under open licenses here that are of any professional value.

Apple and Microsoft may have the money to license typefaces from other groups, or pay to have typefaces developed for them, but a community-built operating system depends on the community to contribute each in their own little way.

I am looking for any open fonts on a professional level, there are a couple already like Gentium, Bitstream Vera out there, which is a great start.

Are there any more freely available and freely redistributable fonts you're already aware of?

I urge all of you who benefit daily from open-source technology (Firefox, Openoffice, even Typophile is hosted on a linux server) to consider contributing some of your work towards the community that has provided you with so much software.

I am looking to build a package of only the highest quality typefaces under a free licenses and make that available for download on my site related to Linux and Design, but they would be valuable to people on all operating systems.

Also, the availability of professional alternatives might help even just a couple from pirating or stealing those fonts type designers sell to make a living. hopefully together we can give the community something valuable, generate more interest in good typography and at the same time help support those commercial designers who rely on font sales.

And lastly, by releasing one font for free with credit to a group of open-source users who desire fresh new fonts, you can direct traffic to your other reasonably priced fonts and this will more thank likely channel an entire new market of clients that are currently not buying your fonts.

New release: Flama mega family by Mario Feliciano

One of the maiden releases when Village launched in 2005, and still one of our most popular offerings, the Flama family has been expanded and improved. Mario Feliciano, the great Portuguese designer, has added three additional widths and some extra weights to this eminently useful sans.

The "standard" Flama family now comprises 10 weights from Thin through Black in both roman and italic with all accents needed for setting western and eastern European languages. Also new for 2008 are Semicondensed, Condensed and Ultracondensed widths of Flama.

The type family will soon be seen everywhere (in Europe, at least) for a major car company.

In InDesign there are two options in the justification window; adobe paragraph composer and adobe single-line compser.
My guide books recommands me to use the first one but it doesn't tell me why. I don't like to be told what to do if I don't understand why I am doing it. Can you guys tell me what this is all about?

some pics from my work on a font for my webpage destinated for very small sizes around 9px.
I am struggling with balancing hinting for small screen sizes, special versions for negative use on black ground with sub pixel rendering and so on…

In this pic one can see the results comparing (for now only) two browsers Google Chrome and Safari both on Mac.

For me the first one is the best, yet it is achieved with a particular thinner version of the same font only for the use on black ground. Otherwise as known sub pixel rendering tends to make fonts look much bolder than they are in reality.
Yet, it creates a hell of difficulties when used in animated texts, even if only a simple fade, for example. Specially Safari renders the font abruptly after the animation is completely done. I tried to change classes in order to keep the thicker version while animating, only exchanging it at the end and so on. In general it works better with CSS transitions but even this does not solve entirely the problem.

Between the second and the third one (with simple greyscale anti-aliasing) Google is way better, specially the strokes are more consistent as here in the example in the ‘in’. Sadly not even a good hinting solves the problem on stroke inconsistency on monitor. Yet the font looks better in Google Chrome.

By the way Firefox does not leave to the developer the choice of greyscale anti-aliasing, as far as I know. One has to do a CSS hack to change class for him and go for slighter font versions on dark ground.

I am looking for a serif type face that is slightly condensed or half condensed.

Up to now I have been using ITC Garamond Condensed or Times New Roman Condensed. I feel the readability is jeopardized with these condensed faces when a certain amount of copy is required.
I know that I can use regular book text copy and drop a point and use tracking to achieve a copy fit but would rather use a slightly condensed serif text face if there is one available.

I have searched around but have not turned up any suitable face.

The copy is usually for marketing brochures and I try to get the client to cut copy but there are times I just have to go with what is supplied.
